Nerd Attack

At one of the colleges near where I live (not in Evans CO), there is a fencing club. To be honest, I don't know how to feel about it. Part of me knows that sword fighting is cool--even if it's less like Braveheart and more like Hamlet--but part of me also feels weird about college nerds playing with swords.

If you aren't worried about the fencing club, just follow me on this road of escalation. A young nerd starts playing Dungeons and Dragons, soon after their thirst for more leads them into the world of LARPing (Live Action Role Play)--these are the guys in the park who dress like they are in Lord of The Rings and hit each other with Styrofoam swords. For a time that was enough; the people who had even more lust for battle just joined the army or something. However, with this fencing club coming up, now these scary nerds can graduate to real swordplay and have the freedom of civilians.

If you have ever been a nerd or a bully, or ever seen a movie about a nerd and a bully, you know that the story will always end with the nerd rising up against the bully and destroying him/her. There is an army of nerds out there just waiting to take out years of frustration on society--nerds who are trained in sword fighting on a collegiate level. Great.

  1. I just had a lengthy conversation about how I want to learn to fence like they do in the Princess Bride.
